'Cybersecurity by design - from research to industry' conference

Bringing research and industry together

Audience

Cybersecurity by Design brought technology professionals, cybersecurity specialists and the CHERI community together in Cheltenham to explore how secure-by-design research can translate into practical technology and industry adoption.

Co-hosted by NCSC, CyNam and the CHERI Alliance, the conference combined invited talks with an exhibition, demonstrations and networking, creating opportunities to learn about CHERI and discuss its application with people working across research, government and industry.

The programme approached cybersecurity by design from both strategic and technical perspectives, combining policy and industry discussion with a closer look at CHERI technology.

One of the technical sessions, for example, explored what is involved in porting existing software to CHERI, including practical experience of adapting C and C++ code and the security benefits that CHERI can provide.

The combination worked particularly well with the audience. Post-event feedback highlighted the mix of policy and technical talks, presentations, poster briefings and demonstrations, as well as the opportunity to talk directly with other organisations working on CHERI.

The exhibition, posters and demonstrations provided another way to explore the technology and start conversations, while dedicated networking time brought together people from the cybersecurity and CHERI communities.

Attendee feedback specifically praised the networking opportunities, demonstrations and range and quality of speakers. One respondent highlighted the value of bringing “a wider group of cyber specialists to the conversation about CHERI”.
